About Emir Cup

Emir Cup, in simple words, is the country’s most popular sports event. Fans and players, sponsors and organizers all wait eagerly for the time when Emir Cup is set for kick-off. The launch of the Emir Cup is nothing short of a festival as sports fans in Qatar impatiently wait for this event.

 

 

 

Since the very beginning, the Emir Cup has had enjoyed a special place in the country’s national sports calendar. A dream for any football player, Emir Cup matches bring out the best in every team and coaches. The chance of receiving the trophy from none other than the Emir is often described as a dream by players.

 
The Emir Cup was first played in 1972 and was won by Al Ahli. The event is contested every season by 18 Qatar Stars League (QSL) and Second Division teams. The most successful team are Al Sadd who won the tournament 15 times followed by Al Arabi who have bagged the title on 8 occasions. Al Sadd are the defending champions.

 

 

 

The Emir Cup has undergone a few changes since it was first played in the early 70s. In 1999, it was decide to include Second Division sides along with the top tier teams playing for Qatar national league title. In 2004, the tournament was planed in such a manner that the event would last five stages.

 

 

 

This year’s edition will consist of the following stages:

 

 

First Stage

With the participation of teams of Qatargas League ranked from one to four, where teams are seeded by means of a drawing lot.

Second stage

With the participation of the teams ranked Thirteenth and fourteenth in Qatar Stars League in addition to teams qualified from the First Stage and teams ranked ninth to twelfth in Qatar Stars League competition, where teams are seeded by means of a drawing lot.

Third stage

With the participation of the teams qualified from the Second Stage as well as teams ranked from five to eight in Qatar Stars League, where teams are seeded by means of a drawing lot.

Fourth Stage (Quarter-final)

With the participation of the teams qualified from the Third Stage as well as teams ranked from one to four in Qatar Stars League.

Fifth Stage (Semi-Final)

With the participation of the teams qualified from the Fourth Stage.

Final Match

The two winning teams from the Fifth Stage qualify to the final match.

    Matches will be played in the knock-out format. Winners from each round proceed to the next round. If a match ends as a draw, both teams will play 30 minutes of extra time which will be divided into two halves of 15 minutes each. In the event the extra time ends as a draw, the QFA will not interfere and both teams will take part in a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.

    COMPETITION ROUNDS

    In its 44th edition; the Emir Cup will consist of six rounds according to the following order: the first round will take place on April 18, Second round on April 23, third round on April28, fourth round on May7,8 fifth round on May 13 and the final match on May 20.
