Qatar lose Tehran thriller
TEHRAN: Qatar on Thursday conceded two injury-time goals to
a go down after a thrilling 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying game
against hosts Iran.
Reza Ghoochannejhad and Alireza Jahanbaksh scored the goals
as Iran picked up first points from the Asian Zone qualifier.
Ghoochannejhad capitalized on a horrendous mistake by Qatar
goalkeeper Amin Lacomte four minutes into injury-time.
Jahanbaksh fired home the second on a long-range shot seal
the deal for Iran at Azadi Stadium.
Qatar dominated play in the first 20 minutes of the game. Striker
Sebastian Soria nearly scored in the 12th minute of the tense
A few minutes later striker Hassan Al Haydos also missed an
opportunity to score.
The game remained tense until the mistake by Qatar goalkeeper
who failed to clear the ball properly allowing Ghoochannejhad
to score an easy goal.
Jahanbaksh doubled the lead moments later.
Daniel Carreno-coached Qatar return home and face Uzbekistan
on September 6 in Doha.
Qatar will next host Uzbekistan on September 6 with the hope
of reviving their campaign.
Earlier in the day, Uzbekistan edged Syria narrowly 1-0, while
South Korea kicked off proceedings with a 3-2 victory over
