Doha: Qatar’s Akram Afif is yet another young talent who

came to prominence through Asian youth competitions,

having already spent time in Spain as a teenager.

The forward scored thrice in the qualifiers for the 2014

AFC U-19 Championship, with his two goals against

Uzbekistan in the final game ensuring Qatar finished on

top of Group A.

At the competition in Myanmar, Afif scored four goals,

including the winner against DPR Korea in the final in

Yangon, as the Qataris won their first ever title.

Afif then went on to score at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World

Cup in New Zealand, before making his senior national

team debut later that year.

Afif, who currently plays for Belgian club K.A.S. Eupen on

loan from La Liga side Villarreal CF. was called up to the

senior national squad in September 2015 by coach Daniel

Carreño. He scored in Qatar’s 15–0 win against Bhutan

on 3 September 2015 during the 2018 World Cup Qualification

rounds. Since then, the pacey forward has earned a regular

spot in Qatar’s starting eleven.
