Al Shahaniya are Second Division champions
DOHA: Second Division champions Al Shahaniya celebrated their return to the QNB
Stars League with a 2-0 victory over Al Wakrah in the final round of the competition
at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on Saturday.
Al Shahaniya officially won promotion to the QNB Stars League two rounds earlier.
Having wrapped up the title race two weeks ago, they were keen to avoid an upset in
their crowning night and they did that in style, winning 2-0 against main rivals Al Wakrah.
Saad Hussien and Claudio Vasquez scored the two goals in quick succession on 46 and
Al Shahaniya had fallen to Second Division last season but the club dominated this season
from the early stages and qualified with two rounds to spare in the five-team league.
It should be noted that Qatar Football Association (QFA) regulations stipulates that the
club coming in last position in First Division will join the Second Division, while the club
ranked 11th in the First Division will play against the club ranked second in Second Division.
Al Wakra, with 18 points, will be pitted against Al Khuraitiyat in the play-off to decide
which of the two sides will play in the QNB Stars League next season, while Al Shahaniya,
with 28 points, have qualified for the top tier of football in the country.
In the closing week’s other match Mesaimeer edged Muaither 1-0 at Al Khor Stadium,
courtesy of a Roberto Breto’s goal on 74 minutes.
