DOHA: Qatar’s Aspire 99 beat their counterparts Red Bull Salzburg 3-1 in Aspire Academy’s 2013-14 Triangular Tournament match.

The third side in the event is Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol.

The Qatari boys proved too wily for their rivals from Austria and dominated the match.

The tournament, which will run until January 2014, pits some of the world’s strongest youth teams, of varying ages, against those of Aspire Academy.

An annual feature, the event attracts plenty of attention from local fans and players.

Ivan Bravo, Aspire Academy’s Director General, said: “We are delighted to welcome such a talented group of players to Aspire Academy. For many of the participants, this tournament offers the first chance to compete at an international level and to test their abilities against players from across the globe.”

He added: “More importantly, we aim to build bridges among the younger generations by fostering the ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and fair play. As the tournament develops, youngsters from some of the world’s most storied clubs, including Liverpool FC, Benfica and Borussia will gain invaluable experience of international competition.”
