DOHA: David Beckham has predicted Qatar will deliver a “special” FIFA World Cup™ in 2022.

The Manchester United legend was in Doha on Saturday to present the trophy to Spanish tennis ace David Ferrer as champion of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.

“Like I said it is a great honour to be here. I was lucky enough to play for (French giants) PSG and it was a very special time for me. I have many friends here and many friends in Paris.”

Arguably the world’s most recognizable footballer, Beckham admits he’s excited by the prospect of the world’s greatest players descending on Qatar in seven years’ time.

Having played in three World Cups himself, the iconic No7 is well placed to comment on what makes a successful tournament.

And Beckham – who also played for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris-Saint Germain – said: “I was here five years ago with AC Milan. It is such a hospitable place.

“It is an incredible place to spend time at. It is changing every time I come here. So many great things happening — obviously the World Cup in 2022. I think it will be a special spectacle.
