El Jaish beat Lekhwiya for Qatar Cup glory
DOHA: A late penalty by Abdelrazzaq Hamadallah on Friday powered El Jaish to Qatar Cup glory in the final against defending champions Lekhwiya.
Hamadallah scored in the 90th minute as El Jaish stunned Lekhwiya 2-1 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Earlier, Mohammed Abdulla Methnani opened the scoring with a snap-header in the 30th minute.
Substitute Alain Dioko produced the equaliser off a powerfully taken penalty kick in the 79th minute.
But Hamadallah’s late strike saw coach Sabri Lamouchi celebrate a worthy win.
Qatar Olympic Committee Chairman HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani presented the trophies to players of both sides before handing over the Qatar Cup to El Jaish skipper Abulrahman Abakar.
It was El Jaish’s second Qatar Cup win in two years. Last year, Lekhwiya won the title.
Qatar Football Association President Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al Thani was also present.
QSL boss Hani Balan was also present at the final.
El Jaish players and backroom celebrated the win by tossing coach Lamouchi in the air following the prize distribution ceremony.
In a game of high intensity, El Jaish clearly showed greater resolve to convert the penalty in the last few seconds of the final watched by a capacity crowd at Al Sadd Stadium.
The three-game event was contested by four top QSL sides – Al Rayyan, El Jaish, Al Sadd and Lekhwiya.
In the first semifinal, Lekhwiya beat Al Rayyan while El Jaish edged Al Sadd.
The teams now prepare for the quarterfinals of the Emir Cup, the last event of the season.
