Doha: Lekhwiya coach Eric Gerets was pleased to see his side get their AFC Champions League campaign back on track after the Qatari side downed 10-man Al Ittihad 2-0 on Tuesday.

Winless in their first two games in Group C, the 2013 quarter-finalists finally secured three points thanks to Sebastian Soria’s first-half strike and a penalty by Nam Tae-hee after the interval at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium.

The win moved Lekhwiya up four points, two behind Group C leaders Al Ain while Al Ittihad slipped to the bottom of the section after suffering their second loss in three games.

“We were good in the first quarter of the match as we controlled proceedings and we took the lead,” said Gerets. “We continued our good form in the second half and we added a second goal which helped us to win.

“The match was decisive and important for us and therefore we had to win in order to get back on track. We have three important and difficult matches to come and hopefully we can get good results in order to qualify from the group,” the Belgian added.
