SAO PAULO، BRAZIL: A goal in the 86th minute by defender Duvan Zapata lifted Colombia over Asian Cup giants Qatar.

The Group B match was the second for both teams on day five of Copa America.

It was Zapata’s second goal for Colombia in as many matches as Qatar nearly managed their second draw in the 12-team tournament.

In what were chilly playing conditions, Zapata headed home on a cross by James Rodriguez in an encounter that saw four Qatari players shown the yellow card.

The result on Wednesday means Colombia, who beat Argentina 2-0 in their opening match, now have six points and top Group B.

Qatar have one point after drawing 2-2 with Paraguay on Sunday. However the Felix Sanchez-coached side could still qualify for the last eight of the tournament.

Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al-Sheeb was threatened more than once in the early part of the first half – the referee canceled a goal scored by Yerri Mina after only six minutes.

The Qatari team was united in the face of Colombian pressure, but Al-Annabi was unable to exploit the few chances that came its way.

In the second half, Qatar’s Al Sheeb saved two goals to keep his side alive in the match.

The Qatari team took a relative risks through intermittent attacks from Abdul Karim Hassan and Akram Afif. Both played got yellow cards later in the match.

Qatar were able to target the goal through an organized strike that ended with Hassan’s shot nearly hitting the left post.

Qatar now take on Argentina in their final Group B match on June 23.
