Lebanon Lose to Kuwait, Crash Out of WAFF Championship
DOHA:Lebanonwere defeated 2-0 byKuwaitSunday and dumped from the first round of the West Asia Football Federation Championship currently taking place in Doha, Qatar.
Both sides knew a defeat would seriously dent their hopes of qualifying for the semifinals as only the winners of each of the three groups qualify directly, with the best second-placed side rounding out the final four.
Fahad Al Hajri opened the scoring for Kuwait on 41 minutes, while Faisal Al Harbi added the second in the 82nd minute.
Lebanon and Kuwait have formed a budding rivalry in recent times, playing each other on five occasions since October 2011, with three games ending in a draw and one win foreach.
Both nations were also battling for the second spot in Group B ofAsia Cup2015 qualification, while Lebanon eliminated Kuwait from the final round of the World Cup qualifiers almost a year ago.
Lebanon were playing their second match of the championship after their opening tie ended in a goalless draw against Jordan. Sunday’s match was Kuwait’s first of the tournament.
