DOHA: Lekhwiya leapt to the top of the standings with a scratchy 2-0 win over Al Wakrah in the Qatar Stars League yesterday.

Wladimir Weiss and Ali Hassan Afeef found the target in the second half to give the defending champions their seventh win in eight matches that took their tally to 21.

Al Sadd stumbled to a 1-1 draw with Al Sailiya with the result they could not build on their lead and slipped to second position with 20 points, while El Jaish also drew with Al Khor.

Lekwhiya barely managed to beat Al Kharatiyat last week and carried on in the same lacklustre vein yesterday, hardly troubling the opposition, especially in the first half.

Striker Sebastian Soria was off colour yet again and the others too were not much better as Sialiya comfortably managed to keep them at bay.

In the second session, Lekhwiya just about got their act together and created a few scoring opportunities but had to wait until the 68th minute to get on the score sheet.

The goal came through Weiss, who, on a move initiated by Soria, found himself perfectly placed inside the penalty area and slipped ball past the Al Wakrah goalkeeper with a calculated shot.

Michael Laudrup’s side then consolidated in the 83rd minute with Ali Hassan Afeef’s fine free-kick after Korean Nam Tae-hee feigned to take the shot and confused the defence.

Meanwhile, an own goal scored by Jung Soo-Lee ruined Al Sadd’s effort to consolidate their position as minnows Al Sailiya clinched an unlikely draw.

Al Sadd appeared headed for victory thanks to an eighth minute goal from Hassan Khalid but Jung’s unfortunate error in the 46th minute ruined the day for the Wolves.

Meanwhile, Qatar sports Club thrashed Al Shamal 3-1, while Al Ahli thrashed Al Kharatiyat 4-0.
