Muscat, Oman: An against the run of play equalizer in the second half helped Bahrain to salvage a 1-1 draw against Qatar in the AFC U17 Asian Cup™ 2023 Qualifiers Group C match on Monday.

The maroons set the tone early on when pacey forward Dekhayel Al Hamad pierced through the Bahrain defenses but was brought down inside the box in hotly debated fashion, but Uzbek referee Riskullaev Akhrol ordered play to continue.

Ali Al Shahabi brilliantly headed home a corner from inside the six-yard box to break the deadlock just ten minutes into the game.
Despite being escorted by three defenders ; Bassam Eid led a daring run from halfway down the field, but his low-driven shot missed the net by a razor-thin margin just five minutes after the opening goal.

Bahrain came close to an eaqualizer on 32 minutes when a defensive blunder resulted in two consecutive shots but were stopped an alert Ziead Shaoaib.

Qatar responded immediately when midfielder Salem Reda curled from outside the box but his ball went over the cross bar.

Bahrain drew level 10 minutes into the second half, with midfielder Sami Bassam Awdi burying the ball into the back of the net. Qatar’s dominance over proceedings continued after Bahrain drew level, coach Al Shafei launched his players forward in search of a thoroughly deserved second goal, however, they failed to score in spite of creating several chances.

The draw raised the maroons’ points tally to four following a win over Iraq in the opening round. Qatar will rest on matchday 3 before taking on hosts Oman next Friday in what could be a watershed moment  in the course of this qualification group.
