Qatar University Clinch University League Title For Third Consecutive Year
Qatar University (QU) was crowned champions of the 2015-16 University League this weekend after defeating Qatar Aeronautical College (QAC) 4-0 in the final match.
The University League, a joint collaboration between Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), was launched in 2013.
This was the second time that QU and QAC had met at the finals.Hazem Samy Selim and Abdulla Al Majed were the star players of the match, which took place at QF’s Recreation Center. Scoring two goals each, they helped their team to lift the trophy for the third consecutive time.
Additionally, the third place playoff took place earlier in the evening. Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) beat Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ) with a final score of 8-0.
An award ceremony was held to honor the first, second, and third place teams, along with theQFA referees. Three special prizes worth QAR5,000 eachwere also presented, including Best Goalkeeper (Ahmad Abdullah Al Buainain), Top Scorer (Tarek Iya Saad), and Best Player (Abdullah Al Majed). The first place team received a cash prize of QAR 40,000, while second and third place teams received QAR 30,000 and QAR 20,000 respectively.
The award ceremony was attended by Hilal Al Mohannadi, Chairman of School and University League Committee in QFA;Dr. Hassan Rashid Al Derham, President of QU; Dr. Khalid Al Khanji, Vice President for Student Affairs of QU; Abdulla Al Naimi, Community Services & Lifestyle Director, QF;Khalid Al Jumaily, Community Engagement Manager in Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy;Mohamed Al Nuaimi, Public Relations Manager in Qatar Aeronautical College, and Mohammed Al Soud the Recreation Services Supervisor, QF.
Hilal Al Mohannadi, Chairman of School and University League Committee in QFA, said: “Congratulations to Qatar University football team for winning the title of the University League for the third consecutive time. The rest of the teams that participated this year all showed great sportsmanship and played their best. We look forward to collaborating with Qatar Foundation next year to organize the fourth edition of this exciting tournament.”
He added: “The University League is an example of QFA’s commitment to nurturing a football culture amongst the youth, and encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyles.”
Commenting on the collaboration, Abdulla Al Naimi, Community Services & Lifestyle Director, QF, said: “We are delighted to work alongside the Qatar Football Association to host the annual University League. Through this endeavor, we are helping toraise awareness of the importance of healthy and active living to members of the community, particularly the youth.”
The third edition brought together nine colleges and universities from across Qatar to competefor the championship title. This year’s tournament featured two groups. Group A includedGeorgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (GUQ), Qatar Aeronautical College (QAC), Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q), and Qatar University (QU). Group B included the University of Calgary in Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ), College of the North AtlanticQatar (CNA-Q), Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), and Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ).
