KUWAIT CITY: Qatar suffered an unexpected setback on Sunday when it was announced that Assim Madibo will miss the remaining part of the Gulf Cup due to a back injury.

The 21-year-old midfielder was taken to a local hospital for scans, QFA said on Sunday.

The player needs rest to stage a complete recovery. The prescribed rest means he will miss the remainder of the Gulf Cup.

Madibo was injured in Qatar’s first game against Yemen on Saturday during the second half.

Ahmed Fathi replaced Madibo in the second half as Qatar beat Yemen 4-0.

Madibo’s absence is a huge loss for the Qatari team, which is defending its title at Gulf Cup.

A replacement has not been announced but Qatar can call in a new player according to the tournament rules and regulations.

The Gulf Cup ends on Jan 5. Qatar has two matches to play in the preliminary stage.

Qatar’s next match is against Iraq on Tuesday followed by a clash against Bahrain on Friday.

Eight teams are taking part in the tournament. Hosts Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman are in Group A.
