QFA President congratulates Al Mohannadi on winning FIFA Council seat
DOHA: Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, President of the Qatar Football Association (QFA), has congratulated Saoud Al Mohannadi on winning the post of AFC Vice-President and for clinching the membership of the FIFA Council following the elections held in Malaysia.
Al Mohannadi was elected by 37 votes out of 46 at the 29th AFC Congress in Kuala Lumpur.
“It is undoubtedly a wonderful achievement for Qatar and Asia,” the QFA President said in his remarks.
He pointed out that the elections victory will usher a new era of leadership for Asian football.
The Qatar delegation at the AFC Congress was headed by the QFA President while the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) delegation was headed by its Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino was also present at the 29th General Assembly Meeting of AFC.
The QFA President said Al Mohannadi’s ascent to the FIFA Council has come at the right time as Qatar continues to complete its preparation to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The AFC Congress also approved Qatar’s proposal to amend a provision in the Statute that prevented candidacy for two posts and thus Al Mohannadi also retained, by acclamation, his position as AFC Vice-Chair for West Asia.
Al Mohannadi, who is also the Vice President of QFA, thanked stakeholders for helping him run a successful campaign.
“I dedicate this win to the wise leadership of the country and I would like to thank everyone who provided support, including Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, President of the Qatar Football Association, and all members of QFA,” Al Mohannadi said.
Al Mohannadi said his victory was possible due to team work.
“This victory is the result of the work of an integrated team and not an individual effort. A lot of people came together and worked hard and made this possible,” he added.
He stressed that he will do his utmost to raise the level of the game in Qatar, in the continent and globally.
