DOHA: QATAR National Bank (QNB) on Wednesday honoured the players of the Qatar national football team for winning the Gulf Cup.

Ali Ahmed al Kuwari, Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of the QNB, applauded the players for their achievement in the presence of Qatar Football Association (QFA) officials.

“We are happy for the team’s success in winning a major title for the country. Qatar are the champions,” said Ali Ahmed after presenting an award to the team. Each player was also presented with a gift pack.

Before the award presentation ceremony, a clip of the team’s road to success was shown in a giant screen.

Qatar lifted the 22nd Gulf Cup championship title after beating hosts Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the final.

“We thank QNB for honouring us in this ceremony for lifting the Gulf Cup,” Boualem Khoukhi, the winning goal scorer in the final, said, adding that”it was a very special win for us”.

A large number of the players, including team captain Bilal Mohammed, and team officials were in attendance at the appreciation ceremony. However, coach Djamel Belmadi was not present at the ceremony.

Boualem was all praise for Belmadi, who guided Qatar to two titles in 2014 — West Asian Football Championship and the Gulf Cup.

Speaking on his crowing goal, Boualem said,”I was able to score the goal with the support of my teammates and I appreciate it.”

When asked about the upcoming Asian Cup, the Al Arabi striker said the team is looking forward to the tournament.”We are ready to take the responsibility in Australia. I want to thank the coaches for their effort. Belmadi has proven himself as a good coach. His success in Lekhwiya and the national team speaks volumes of his credibility.”

Qatar midfielder Wesam Rizik said,”It is a great moment for us and we are still in the celebration mood.”

“It is a dream comes true for us. As a kid I always wished to have one like this. I hope to continue in this form and it is just the beginning. We still have a lot of challenges ahead and we will start from the Asian Cup. We hope to make everybody in the country happy,” Wesam said.
