Buraidah, Saudi Arabia: Al Taawoun FC stunned Qatari heavyweights Al Duhail SC 2-0 at King Abdullah Sport City Stadium on Matchday Two of the 2020 AFC Champions League Group C on Tuesday.
The Saudi side were looking to build on their opening day win over Sharjah as they hosted 2018 quarterfinalists Al Duhail who had yet to beat a Saudi team in the AFC Champions League.
Veteran Mohammed Al Sahlawi opened the scoring for the hosts in the 34th minute.
The former Al Nassr striker showed his poacher instinct to react quickest to Amine Lecomte’s spilled ball as the Qatari goalkeeper attempted to save a long-range effort from Abdulmajeed Al Swat.
Al Sahlawi returned the favour for Al Swat in the second half providing the assist for Al Taawoun’s second of the night.
Yaseen Barnawi applied the pressure on Ahmed Yassir, retrieved the ball and passed to Al Sahlawi, who in turn fed A Swat in space inside the box and the winger applied a composed finish past Lecomte to put the hosts’ win beyond doubt in the 54th minute.
The result puts Al Taawoun top of the group with six points, while Sharjah’s 2-2 draw with Persepolis in the other Tuesday fixture means Al Duhail stay in second place with three points, while Persepolis are third on one point, ahead of Sharjah courtesy of away goals.
Al Taawoun are away to Persepolis next, while Al Duhail’s Matchday Three fixture sees them hosting Sharjah in Doha in two weeks’ time.
