U-23 National Team

Compared to its regional counterparts, Qatar boasts an impressive record in Olympic football, having qualified for the Summer Olympics twice and claiming the gold medal at the 2006 Asian Games on home soil.  

/FIRST APPEARANCE

1984

Qatar’s first Olympic appearance at Los Angeles 1984 was nothing short of spectacular. Held France (led by Michel Platini) to a 22 draw—France went on to win gold. Despite defeats to Chile and Norway, Qatar’s performance sent shockwaves through global football.  

 

1992

Eight years later, a new golden generation emerged at Barcelona 1992:  
Group Stage:  
10 win over Egypt  
11 draw vs. Colombia  
02 loss to Spain (still advanced)  
Quarterfinals: Lost 02 to Poland, but this marked Qatar’s best Olympic finish to date.  

2006

As hosts of the 2006 Asian Games (Doha), Qatar had dual ambitions: proving its organizational prowess and delivering on the pitch. The U23s exceeded expectations:  
Went unbeaten throughout the tournament.  
Gold Medal Final: Defeated Iraq 10, securing Qatar’s firstever Asian Games football title.  

2018

Won bronze at the AFC U23 Championship (China). 

2020

Qualified for the AFC U23 Championship (Thailand), a gateway to the Tokyo Olympics. 

2022

 Under Chilean coach Nicolás Córdova, reached the AFC U23 Championship (Uzbekistan).  

2024

Hosted the AFC U23 Championship (Doha), advancing to the quarterfinals.

Full Name: Ilídio Vale  

Date of Birth: December 13, 1953  

Place of Birth: Portugal  

 

Appointed on August 9, 2023, Vale brings a wealth of youthteam expertise:  Former coach of Portugal’s U23, U20, and U19 teams.  

Served on the technical staff of Portugal’s senior national team.  

 

With Vale at the helm, Qatar’s U23s aim to return to the Olympics and add more silverware to their storied legacy.
