The Sheikh Jassim Cup is the curtain-raiser tournament of the football season organized by the Qatar Football Association. It was first held in 1977 and takes place annually in August as the season’s opening competition.
The tournament format changed starting from the 2014/2015 season. It became a single match played between the winner of the Qatar Stars League and the winner of the Amir Cup from the previous season.
Al Sadd is the most successful club in the competition’s history, having won it 15 times, most recently in the 2019–2020 season with a 1-0 victory over Al Duhail.
Al Arabi comes second with 6 titles, followed by Al Rayyan with 5. Both Al Wakrah and Qatar SC have won 4 titles each, while Al Gharafa and Al Duhail have 2 titles each. Al Khor, Al Shamal, Muaither, and Umm Salal each have one title.
Al Sadd was also the first team to win the Sheikh Jassim Cup under the new single-match format, defeating Al Duhail 3-2 at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium at the beginning of the 2014–2015 season.
Under the previous format, the tournament included all 18 clubs from the first and second divisions. Teams were divided into four groups, playing round-robin matches within each group. The top team from each group advanced to the semi-finals, where the winner of Group 1 played the winner of Group 3, and the winner of Group 2 faced the winner of Group 4. The two semi-final winners then competed in the final.
