Doha: Ten-man Al Sadd suffered a 6-2 defeat to Esperance Sportive de Tunis in the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2019 fifth place play-off at Khalifa International Stadium yesterday.
Al Sadd found themselves two goals down after just 13 minutes as Esperance’s Libyan forward Hamdou Elhouni netted a hat-trick as the Tunisian side recorded a deserved victory.
Esperance showed their desire early in the match as they created their first chance after only two minutes when Elhouni finished a good run down the left by sending a neat pass to Ali Ben Romdhan, whose shot was blocked by Al Sadd defender Abdelkarim Hassan on the goal line.
Esperance opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Elhouni had enough time and space inside the area to fire a powerful shot past Al Sadd goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham.
It was 2-0 seven minutes later as Elhouni took advantage of Hamid Khaleefa’s poor back pass, sending the ball to Anice Badri to slot home into an empty net.
Al Sadd woes continued in the 22nd minute as Hassan was sent off for blocking Badri’s flick with his hand in the area. Badri converted the penalty.
Al Sadd pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the 31st minute after Akram Afif was fouled inside the area. Baghdad Bounedjah made no mistake from the spot.
However, Esperance scored a fourth goal three minutes before the break when Elhouni received a long ball from the back, made his way into the area and despite the presence of an Al Sadd defender, scored at the near post.
Al Sadd reduced the deficit four minutes into the second half when they were awarded another penalty for Afif being brought down by Abdelkader Bedrane. Hassan Al Haydos scored.
Elhouni, however, was not to be denied his glory as he completed his hat-trick by connecting to Ilyes Cheti’s powerful low cross in the 74th minute. Esperance rounded off the big victory three minutes before the end as Sameh Derbali beat the offside trap to fire home on the right side.
