DOHA: In keeping with past tradition to fulfill social responsibility programs, the Qatar Football Association (QFA) on Tuesday organised a blood donation campaign in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the the Higher Committee for Projects and Heritage.
The blood donation campaign, held at Al Bidda Tower, raised the slogan 'Thank you for saving my life' as a scores of QFA employees and officials featured in the day's program.
QFA representatives, in the forefront to run social responsibility programs to bring communities together in Qatar, on Tuesday welcomed officials from HMC and the Committee to Al Bidda Tower to complete the day's program of collecting blood donations.
The day's campaign was mooted to meet the high demands for blood at government hospitals across the country.
HMC, an official said, follows strict internationally-observed rules and regulations in running blood donations campaign.
It said any blood donor must be at least 50kg in weight. The donor must have had a peaceful sleep of at least six hours followed by a healthy meal.
The official said blood donation is a great noble human gesture. Blood donation helps save many lives in Qatar every year, the official added.
"There is always a need to donate blood. Blood donation campaigns are the great support provided by members of all communities," the official added.
Donating blood regularly helps the donor lead a health life, studies have shown. Several studies in the US and Finland have shown that the rate of heart attacks and cerebral hemorrhage is much lower among blood donors than in the rest of the population.
Regular blood donation reduces the amount of iron in the red blood cells. Iron is a toxic substance that causes oxidation of oxygen and thus reduces the risk of these diseases.
