CHANGZHOU: Qatar coach Felix Sanchez praised the performance of
his players, saying they put up a spirited show to beat Oman 1-0 in
their second AFC U-23 Asian Cup match clash on Friday.
Ace midfielder Akram Afif scored the only game of the match in the
43rd minute as Qatar picked up three points to go to the top Group A
at Changzhou Sports Centre.
On Friday, Uzbekistan stunned China 1-0 in the other Group A clash.
Qatar have six points from two matches following their 1-0 win over
Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
"I am proud of my players as they have played against two strong
teams in Uzbekistan and Oman so far and have performed well,"
Sanchez said on Friday.
"I think both teams made a good effort today. It was great that we
were able to get the three points," he added.
"Oman pushed hard and made it difficult for us to control the ball
at times, but we had our chances to score on the counter-attack,"
Sanchez said.
Hamad Al Azani, Oman's head coach, said on Friday: "I am disappointed
by the result. A lot of my players are young, and they have a (bright)
future, we have to support them."
Al Azani added: "I think we did well to restrict Qatar’s goal-scoring chances
and had opportunities of our own in the first half and then in the second
half when we changed our formation and played with two strikers."
