Basra, Iraq: Qatar on Tuesday emerged winners of the Tri-Nation International Friendship Tournament when
hosts Iraq were held to a 1-1 draw by Syria in the third and final match of the event.
The 1-1 draw meant Qatar topped the points table with one win against Iraq (3-2) and a draw against Syria
(2-2).
Coached by Felix Sanchez, Qatar arrived in Basra after it was announced that Iraq Football Association (IFA)
will celebrate the return of football after three decades by hosting the event.
QFA President H E Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmad Al Thani was present at the prize distribution ceremony
on Tuesday. The entire hierarchy of IFA was also present as were football officials from Syria.
Captain Hassan Al Haydos received the winner's trophy after each player of Qatar side was handed a medallion
for winning the three-nation event.
On Tuesday Mohanad Ali opened the scoring for Iraq before Firas Al-Khatib produced the equaliser. Both goals
came in the second half in front of a packed Basra City Sports Stadium.
