Doha: Al Duhail SC head coach Walid Regragui described his side’s 2-0 win against Persepolis FC in their 2020 AFC Champions League Group C tie on Tuesday as an important victory.
Mario Mandzukic and Edmilson found the net within the first 13 minutes at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium as Qatar's Al Duhail got off to a roaring start.
The Moroccan, who only took charge of Al Duhail three weeks ago, was pleased with the performance of his players, who have had a heavy schedule in recent weeks.
“I want to congratulate the players for the performance they had, especially in the first half,” said Regragui. “We put a lot of pressure on our opponents and controlled the match."
“Things changed in the second half as we gave the chance to our opponents to control the ball. However, I’m very happy with the result against a team who hadn’t lost in their last 12 matches.
“We are playing matches every five days and this affected the performance of the players in the second half."
“What annoyed me is that we failed to score more goals from the chances that we created.
“I hope that this start will be a good lesson for us. We still have matches to win and we must continue working very hard to avoid mistakes in the matches to come.”
