TYCHY, Poland: Defender Denys Popov on Monday produced a second-half goal to help Ukraine beat Qatar 1-0 in a tough Group D match at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
It was the second time that the Ukraine defender scored a winning goal at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland in his side's hard-fought 1-0 victory which confirmed their place in the knockout phase.
After an evenly-contested first half, Popov headed home in the 59th minute on a second-chance opportunity from an initial corner for the Ukrainians. Serhii Buletsa provided the delivery for his second assist of the competition.
Things went from bad to worse for Qatar as captain Nasir Peer was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Maksym Chekh.
Ukraine have now advanced to the Round of 16 in all four of their appearances in competition history (2001, 2005, 2015 and 2019).
However, they have yet to reach the quarter-finals.
Qatar, coached Bruno Miguel, will not play the United States in their final Group D match on May 30.
On Friday Qatar lost to Nigeria in their opening match.
