DOHA: Umm Salal on Tuesday beat Al Shamal 3-1 at Thani bin Jassim Stadium to advance to the next round of the Amir Cup.
Umm Salal’s prolific striker Sagbo netted twice in the first half to pave the way for a stress-free win on Saturday.
Just ten minutes into the game, Sagbo toyed with the Al Shamal’s defence before slotting the ball to the back of the net to put Umm Salal in a commanding position at Al Gharafa Stadium before he delivered another display of coolness in the 19th minute when he lobbed the ball over the rushing the goalkeeper.
Umm Salal’s edge continued in the second half as Syria’s international Mahmoud Al Mawas capitalized on a penalty box blunder to seal the game’s fate on 54 minutes. Abdulaziz Al Meqbali, whose solo performance proved the difference in eliminating Mesaimeer in the first round of the competition, pulled one back for Al Shamal on 67 minutes but it was afar from posing a serious threat to Umm Salal’s comfortable win.
Umm Salal are now poised to take on Al Arabi in the next round of the Amir Cup.
The 47th edition of the Amir Cup kicked off last week with one match already held. There will be five stages in the most popular football tournament in the country.
Tomorrow, Al Markhiya take on Al Kharaitiyat at Grand Hamad Stadium while Muaither face Qatar SC at the same venue.
In the third stage of the tournament on April 26, Al Arabi, Al Gharafa, Al Shahaniya and Al Ahli will take on the winners of the second round.
