DOHA: QSL champions Lekhwiya closed their season on a dismal note as they succumbed to a 2-3 defeat to Al Ahli in the quarterfinal of the HH Emir Cup. Over the past few weeks, the three-time QSL winners seem to have lost their focus completely. They bowed out of the Asian Champions League with some uncharacteristically below-par performances which saw them win only two of their six group matches. And in the final of the inaugural Qatar Cup, which replaced the Heir Apparent Cup, they fell on penalties to El Jaish. Iranian Mujtaba Jabbari starred the show in the first half as he scored two goals on 4 and 24 minutes, the astute playmaker was conveniently placed inside the six-yard box to win the rebound ball off of keeper Lekut Amin to fire Al Ahli into a quick lead. Twenty minutes later, Jabbari was on the receiving end of a Meshal Abdullah cross to blast from the edge of the penalty box. However, two goals through Adel Ahmed and Vladimir Weiss put Eric Gerets's men on the driving seat in the second half, as substitutes Yousif Msakeni and Nam Tee proved a tough test for Al Ahli defenders. and when it seemed that both sides were rather content to resort to penalty shootouts to decide a winner; Congolese striker Alain Dioko netted a 90th minute goal to announce Lekhwiya's exit out of the closing competition of the Qatari football season. In Doha's historical derby, Al Sadd edged past arch rivals Al Arabi at the Grand Hamad stadium courtesy of two goals from Rodrigo Tabata and Qatari international Hassan Al Haydoos. MOHD9843-479x365 Tabata, produced a moment of brilliance on 38 minutes when he curled in a trademark 25 yard free kick past keeper Rajab Hamza, who prior to the goal managed to put Al Sadd's attacking exertions into a halt on several occasions. Backed by their trophy-parching home fans; Al Arabi were resolute in their quest for a comeback, coach Carpegiani's previously attack-minded line-up was further bolstered in the second half with the introduction of duo Mohammed Modathir and Bruno Rangel, for which they were punished for by Hassan Al Haydoos's brilliant individual goal in stoppage time to put the gloss ona 2-0 victory.
