Doha: Al Sailiya will clash with Al Sadd in the final of the Emir Cup.
In the semi-finals here yesterday, Al Sailiya defeated Al Ahli 3-0 in the penalty shoot-out, while in the second match of the day, last year’s runners-up Al Sadd were lucky to edge Al Gharafa 2-1.
The score line at the end of full time in the first match between Al Sailiya and Al Ahli read 2-2 and the teams shared a goal apiece at the end of half time play.
For Al Ahli it was a case of so close yet so far.
A goal two minutes from end shattered Al Ahli dreams of making it to the final.
Coach Milan Macala’s side were leading till that period but conceded a penalty kick at the fag end of play when goalkeeper Amer Dosari was pulled up for having brought down a rival striker.
Fawzi Ayiesh who stepped up to take the kick made no mistake from the spot sending Dosari the other way with his try much to the cheers of the Al Sailiya supporters.
Earlier, Meshal Abdullah scored a brace (22nd and 84th minute) for Al Ahli to give them the lead, but both his goals were neutralised by strikes by Marcelo Tavares in the 31st and Ayiesh in the 88th minute.
In the second semi-final, Al Sadd took the lead in the 15th minute through a goal from Rodrigo Tabata, but Al Gharafa came back strongly and equalised twenty minutes later with Lisandro Lopez finding the back of the nets.
Thereafter a controversial spot kick goal from Khalfan Ibrahim gave Al Sadd the lead in the 40th minute and they held on to it till the end.
Khalfan’s scored on his second attempt, the spot kick which was ordered to be retaken by the referee, his first try was saved by the rival keeper, but the referee adjudged that the keeper had moved before the striker had taken the kick.
The Qatar marksman made no mistake with the second chance he got.
Khalfan first try, which was saved, was to the left of the keeper, but the Qatar striker again went for the spot to the left of the keeper and succeeded this time in beating the outstretched hands of the keeper.
The final will be played on May 17 at Khalifa Stadium.
