PARIS: Football legend Franz Beckenbauer has backed the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, saying the game's showpiece event in the Middle East would be memorable. "I wish to to see the World Cup in Qatar," the former German World Cup winning captain said. When asked about the timing of the World Cup in Qatar, the 69-year-old said 'winter would be a better choice'. The Bayern Munich star went on to say that 'Qatar was capable of staging the World Cup in summer as well'. Qatar beat Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States in the vote for 2022 World Cup. Russia beat a bid from England and joint bids from Belgium and the Netherlands, and Portugal and Spain, for the right to host the 2018 tournament. Beckenbauer is one of only two men, along with Brazil's Mario Zagallo, to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a coach. He is the only one to win it as captain and coach: he lifted the World Cup trophy as captain in 1974, and repeated the feat as a manager in 1990.
