Doha to host summit on football corruption

DOHA: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President will be joined by top football and match-fixing watchdog bodies in a summit to be held on May 17th 2014. The summit was timed to coincide with Qatar’s most anticipated annual football tournament, the H.H The Emir Cup Final as many top international football officials will come to Doha to watch the prestigious match, which is annually attended by H.H The Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The summit will debate issues like match-fixing and betting scams that have tarnished the game across Asia and the rest of world. The issue of football corruption will be extensively debated in speeches and research papers worked on by the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS). The summit initiative has been planned by Qatar Football Association in collaboration with Qatar Stars League (QSL), ICSS and Josoor Institute. The Football Integrity & Security Summit aims to put an end to corrupt practices in the game in the shape of match-fixing and illegal bets involving fans and players. A treaty to end the menace of match-fixing and illegal bets is also expected to be signed by those who will feature at the summit. AFC President Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, QFA President Sheikh Hamad Bin Ahmed Bin Khalifa Al Thani and ICSS chief Mohammed Hanzab will be the prominent speakers whilst European football chiefs will also attend.
