DOHA: Defending champions Lekhwiya got off to flying start at the Qatar Stars League (QSL) when they thrashed Qatar SC 5-0 in their opening match, here yesterday at Lekhwiya Stadium.
The victory is the first for Lekhwiya under new coach Michael Laudrup who saw his side lose to Al Sadd 3-2 at the Sheikh Jassim Cup game, earlier this month.
With the resounding victory, the title holders also avenged their last season’s 5-0 defeat to Qatar SC this April.
Spurred in front of the home crowd, Lekhwiya took control of the proceedings right from the beginning.
Their aggressive display paid dividend when Jose Manuel Moreno found target with a clinical header in 12th-minute corner.
Young Kyuky’s own goal, 13 minutes later doubled the lead for hosts as they walk into the second half with a 2-0 lead. Laudrup’s team came back as an improved side in the second session under hot and humid conditions to score three more goals for a perfect start.
Nam Labyrinthine extended lead in the 53rd minute while Youssef Msakine made it 4-0, four minutes later. Landry Sebastian sealed the 5-0 drubbing with a goal in 79th minute.
Meanwhile, the game between Al Kharaitiyat and Al Shamal ended in a 1-1 draw. El Jaish came back from behind to down Al Wakrah 3-2 in a thrilling contest while Al Gharafa also collected full points after edging out Umm Salal 1-0 with Argentinian Lisandro Lopez scoring the winning goal.
