Fulbari , Nepal: Youth ambassadors from the Supreme Delivery for Delivery & Legacy’s Generation Amazing programme have organised a football activity day for teenage girls and boys in Fulbari, located in a remote region of Nepal. It was the first ever girls football match of its kind in the community. Dol Prasad Kafle, a teacher at the Janajagriti Secondary School said: “These achievements have encouraged them to play more football. Those who used to think that they should not even talk about football because they were rural women have started dreaming of a future in football after learning and developing the skills to play at the district, zonal, national and international level.” The event was jointly organised by Mercy Corps, a local football club, and the District Football Association with the support of the Generation Amazing programme. Poverty, a low level of literacy and annual flooding during the monsoon season have hindered development in this community. As a result, children drop out of school early, girls enter into marriage at an early age, and boys migrate elsewhere for work. In order to increase the number of opportunities for remote village communities in the area, the Generation Amazing programme is working with youth ambassadors to develop their leadership skills through football. All secondary schools in Fulbari participated in a recent play day, which was organised by Generation Amazing Ambassadors in the area. After the match, participating girls showed a great desire to continue playing football. Historically there have been barriers to female participation in sport, including a lack of football kits, no female coaches and little support for women’s sport from family members. However, following the football activity day, some positive steps have been taken in the development of football in the area. These girls went on to form a team and played in a football competition organised by the District Football Association, where they won their first title. During the tournament, members of their team were also awarded the best player, best defender and top scorer awards. There has been a change in their parents’ opinion as well, with a growing belief that their daughters can develop their leadership skills and better themselves through sport. They supported their daughters to participate, even during the rainy season, which is when crops are usually cultivated. Altogether, 36 girls are regularly playing football at the regional level. The Vice President of the Kailali Football Association said: “Now they will give a future to football by selecting the new youths from the rural areas. Continuing such work will definitely help in promoting the local game.” A quiz competition on the FIFA World Cup™ was also organised by Generation Amazing Ambassadors Sudarshan Strestha and Muna Pangali of Kailali through the support of their schools and the Red Cross Circle. A total of seven schools have participated in the quiz competition to date. As well as the FIFA World Cup™ quiz competition, the Generation Amazing Ambassadors from Fulbari Higher Secondary School, who recently returned from a 16-day visit to Qatar and Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, shared their experiences with the other students. www.sc.qa
