Doha: With a late goal in stoppage time, Haiti edged Qatar and secured a 2-1 victory in their opening group game at Houston's NRG Stadium.   Twenty minutes into their second appearance, Yusuf Abdurisag of Qatar curled the ball in the top corner of a shaken Haitian defense.   Homam Ahmad came close to giving the Qataris a second goal, but his shot went high and wide of the post.   Just before halftime, Haiti launched a series of counterattacks against the Maroons.   Not until Duckens Nazon tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick in the second half did the effort become meaningful.   In the 75th minute, Abdurisag nearly scored again as the in form striker struck a shot from outside the penalty area.   After Qatar's defense had been depleted due to repeated yellow cards, Frantzdy Pierrot scored in the waning seconds of regulation time.   Qatar are competing in this tournament as part of their aspirations for better performances on the global arena, highlighting the upcoming Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup finals, the AFC Asian Cup 2023 in Qatar.   Qatar were drawn in Group B along with Haiti, Mexico and Honduras.   Participating at a special invitation from the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), Al Ennabi record their second featuring in the tournament. They were eliminated from the semi-finals in the 2021 edition in the US.
