DOHA: With Kuwait’s Kazima just minutes from sealing a spot in the
semifinals of the 2015 Del Monte GCC Club Championship, Qatar’s
second division champions Al Rayyan scored two late goals to capsize
the scoreline for a 2-1 win in a dramatic quarterfinal clash at Suhaim
bin Hamad Stadium on Sunday.
Following a goalless first session, Kazima grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the
49th minute through Al Rayyan’s defender Otavio Nathan, who misjudged
a low cross to clear the ball into his own net. With keeper Rashid Ma’atouq
continuing to make inspiring saves as the second half progressed, it
seemed like the 1-0 scoreline would be enough to propel the orange and
blue onto the semis.
The Al Rayyan’s rally arose in the 85th minute when Ukranian striker Marko
Divic scored the equalizer following a well-executed long range shot. Soon
after, he scored the winning goal on a penalty kick in stoppage time.
Al Rayyan have recently celebrated their return to the Qatar Stars
League after a shock relegation one year ago.
The semifinals will take place on May 20, while the final match will be
held on May 27.
