Doha: Defending champions Al Sadd and Qatar Stars League (QSL) winners Lekhwiya registered contrasting wins to advance to the semi-finals of the Emir Cup.
Yesterday, playing on their home ground Lekhwiya were made to toil by a determined Umm Salal.
Coach Michael Laudrup side could not score in regulation time but kept their cool in the penalty shoot-out to emerge on top, converting all the five spot kicks to register a 5-3 win.
Umm Salal were not successful with the first one as former Qatar national team player Fabio Cesar shot wide. The next three Umm Salal players Ahmed, Tamir and Ismail scored but that was not enough as Lekhwiya were on target from the spot.
For Lekhwiya, Sebastian Soria, Jose Moreno, Karim Moudhhif, Vladmir Weiss and Youssef Msakni found the net.
With yesterday’s win Lekhwiya, who have already won the QSL and Qatar Cup, kept them in the hunt for a triple.
Earlier, Al Sadd came from behind to trounce Al Khor 3-1.
Julio Cesar put Al Khor in the lead in the 28th minute and they held on to the lead till the end of the first half.
On resumption, Al Sadd did not take much time to find the equaliser. Jung Soo found the target to make it one-all. Twenty minutes later, Al Sadd took the lead with Haydos beating the Al Khor keeper. Grafite put the issue beyond doubt for Al Sadd with a goal in the 90th minute.
On Sunday, El Jaish trounced Al Rayyan 5-1 and Qatar Sports Club coasted to easy 4-1 win over Al Shahaniya to make it to the semi-finals, both which will be played on May 15 at Al Sadd Stadium. The final will be on May 23.
