PHOENIX, Arizona: Coach Felix Sanchez on Saturday said the Qatar team had adapted well while playing against different teams on their introduction to the Gold Cup.
Qatar, the Asian champions, are now getting ready for their quarterfinal against El Salvador.
Earlier in the group stage, Qatar drew with Panama before beating Honduras and Grenada to reach the last-eight stage.
"We showed that we succeeded in adapting to different football schools when facing the CONCACAF teams," Sanchez said on Saturday.
Sanchez underlined the team's goal-scoring spree last week, saying scoring nine goals in the group stage gave confidence to the players.
The maroons attacking prowess was quite evident throughout the group stage; No team scored more goals than the reigning Asian champions in the group stage, with nine goals as they took the top spot in Group D.
The Spanish coach said the team also developed on the defensive level after the first round in which it drew with Panama.
The coach praised the brilliant partnership of Al-Moez Ali and Akram Afif.
"These two players helped greatly in raising the team's level in the offensive. I think the team has done well here in this tournament," Sanchez said.
Felix Sanchez’s men were impressive in the group stage, where they were unbeaten after wins over Grenada (4-0) and Honduras (2-0) besides playing a thrilling 3-3 draw against Panama in their opening game.
Sanchez said that the maroons are waiting for a tough match in the quarterfinal against El Salvador. Sanchez said El Salvador had presented "outstanding levels of play" in the group stage.
"Having said that, our goal will be to present a good match and match the opponent with an attacking game," Sanchez said.
