ZURICH: AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has said
that the FIFA Executive Committee's decision to host the 2022 World
Cup in November and December was made with the interests of world
football in mind.
Shaikh Salman attended FIFA Executive meeting on Thursday and Friday
in Zurich - under the chairmanship of FIFA President Sepp Blatter -
and presented the report of the FIFA task force asked to recommend the
final dates for the 2022 World Cup.
After the meeting, Shaikh Salman pointed out that the Executive
Committee members were in full agreement that November and December
was the best time frame in which to hold the World Cup and make it a
success.
The AFC President added the logic behind choosing November and
December had been explained during the Executive Committee and covered
matters such as the legalities of playing the tournament in 2022, the
desire not to play the World Cup in summer and the need to ensure that
it did not clash with the Winter Olympics.
He added: "We think that hosting the finals in November and December
is the best way to attract spectators from all over the world given
the ideal climate.
“We also believe that it will pave the way for a strong technical
competition. The tournament will come in the middle of the season for
most of the countries and players will be at their peak unlike during
the finals played after a long season in summer where the players may
be tired and more susceptible to injury," he said.
Shaikh Salman also noted that the decision heralds a new stage in the
preparations for the first ever World Cup in the Middle East.
He also reiterated the support being given by the Asian football
family to Qatar in their efforts to organise the best ever World Cup.
