Santa Clara, California: Qatar struck already-qualified Mexico to finish in second place in Group B, eliminating Honduras from contention despite the latter's 2-1 victory over Haiti.
The hosts of the 2022 World Cup, managed by Portugal's Carlos Queiroz, took the lead in the 27th minute when Hazem Shehata scored on an angled header from a Musaab Khidir cross from the right. Qatar, making their second appearance as a guest team in the competition, pulled off an impressive victory despite facing intense pressure from Mexico in the second half. In their first ever Gold Cup debut two years ago, the Asian champions Qatar made it all the way to the semifinals. Their victory meant Honduras’s comeback win against Haiti was in vain, an agonising outcome for the Central American side, whose players waited on the field as Qatar clung on.
