Arlington, Texas: Qatar lost to Panama 0-4 in the first quarter-finals match of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday afternoon. Ismael Diaz scored a second-half hat-trick in less than 10 minutes to earn his team the victory.
In the 19th minute, Panama finally got on the board thanks to a header from Joel Barcenas that Qatari goalie Salah Zakaria had no chance of saving.
The goal was checked for an offsides position by VAR, but in the end it was given after being reviewed by Mexican referee Cesar Ramos.
The changes Qatar made for the second half paid off for a short period of time, as they applied more pressure on the Panamanian goal than they had in the first 45 minutes.
However, ten minutes into the second half, Diaz scored on a wide-open shot, beating Zakaria for a 2-0 lead.
Diaz scored Panama's third goal eight minutes later, and then he scored again a few minutes later to make it 4-0.
Panama kept trying to score, but they weren't able to since their coach made several replacements to rest his starters before the semifinals.
Qatar are featuring at the Gold Cup as a guest side for the second time. The Maroons had taken part in the tournament in 2021, where they had lost to eventual champions the United States in the semi-finals.
