DOHA: Qatar's U23 team lost to UAE 1-0 in the opening of the international friendly championship matches for under-23 teams at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
Iraq, Kuwait and South Korea posted wins over Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan and Oman respectively while Thailand drew with Saudi Arabia.
The UAE national team scored the goal of the match when Issa Khalfan found the net in the 17th minute of the match.
Qatar could not score the equalizer as the visitors closed the match by winning it 1-0. Qatar coach Bruno Miguel made numerous changes in the second half but the result remained the same.
Saudi Arabia and Thailand shared points in a 2-2 draw whereas Korea beat Oman convincingly, posting a 3-0 victory at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium. At the same venue, Iraq beat Vietnam 3-0.
Round two
The matches of the second round will start on Saturday, March 25, in which Qatar will meet Thailand at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium while Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium will host two matches - UAE vs Vietnam and Oman vs Kyrgyzstan.
The matches of the second day will be concluded at Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium where Iraq will meet South Korea while Kuwait will play against Saudi Arabia.
The 10 teams participating in the tournament are preparing to enter the AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers, which will be held next September.
