RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA: Ibrahim Majid’s second-half header earned Qatar a 1-1 draw with hosts Saudi Arabia in the opening match of the 2014Gulf Cup on Thursday at Kin g Fahad Stadium, in a result which leaves Group A with all to play for ahead of the final two rounds of group games.
Even though Qatar enjoyed nearly 60% of ball position , Saudi Arabia broke the deadlock on 37 minutes, Nasser Al Shamrani powered into the penalty area before setting up Fahad Mawalad, whose pace earned him priority to lung towards the ball and beat keeper Burhan.
Qatar's Al Haydos went close to an immediate reply as he burst into the penalty area from the left-flank and forced goalkeeper Abdullah Hassan into a hasty block.
However, Qatar were back on level terms just nine minutes inside the second half as Hassan Al Haydos’s corner was headed in by Ivbrahim Majid, steaming in at the back post.
Substitute Khoki Bualam could have added the second for Qatar just three minutes later after leaving defender Osama Hawsawi for dead and surging into the penalty area, but rather than try to score himself, he unselfishly squared the pass for Al Hydos who was dispossessed by a backtracking defender.
While both sides tried to create chances to take all three points the final ball was lacking, although with Qatar visibly growing in confidence as the half wore on.
Qatar will now take on Yemen in the second round of Group A, meanwhile Saudi play Bahrain in a game that is likely to determine the group's outcome.
