Doha: Qatar were held to a 1-1 draw by Russia in a friendly match after Aleksandr Soldatenkov struck late in the 89th minute at the Al Janoub Stadium on Tuesday. It was disappointing for Qatar after the hosts conceded in the stoppage time to lose against Kenya in another friendly last week.
In a departure from their previous match against Kenya, coach Carlos Queiroz strategically decided to field a more experienced starting lineup. Notably, Akram Afif and Almoez Ali were given the nod to lead the attack.
In a stunning display of skill and precision, Al Gharafa forward Ahmed Alaaeldin took to the field in the second half, replacing Almoez Ali. Alaaeldin soared above the Russian defence, seizing the opportunity to connect with Homam al-Amin's perfectly placed cross to head home and score past the Russians' replacement goalie, Ilya Lantratov.
Russian replacement Soldatenkov scored an equalizer for his team in the 89th minute, much to the dismay of the sizeable home crowd. After receiving a corner kick from Maksim Glushenkov, the 26-year-old headed the ball beyond Saad al-Sheeb.
