U-16s set for Iran challenge

DOHA: Qatar U-16 national team are set to take on Iran in their opening match in the AFC U-16 Championship currently taking place in Thailand. Qatar has been tagged along Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria in Group D of the 16-team AFC U-16 Asian Cup. The draws were made on Bangkok where the participating teams were divided into four groups. The top sides in round two qualify for the semifinals. The two two sides in each group reach the quarterfinals. With Asia's best sides featuring in the event, predicting a winner from each group will be a tough task, an AFC official said. Qatar take on Iran in their first match on Sunday. Head coach of Qatar, Oscar Fernandes will be hoping his team would be well prepared after a series of friendly and lengthy training camps. "We have a positive approach going into this event. We know we have to play quality football to advance," a QFA team official said. "A win first up will definitely help the side gain in momentum," he added. Qatar take on Iran on September 7, face Syria on September 9 and play regional rivalsSaudi Arabia on September 11 in the first three matches.
