HAMILTON, New Zealand: Portugal coach Helio Sousa said on Wednesday
ball possession for long periods of time helped his side beat Qatar in
their Group C clash at FFA U-20 World Cup.
Striker Ivo scored twice (42 and 66) while Andrea Silva (34) and
substitute Joao Vigario (74) managed one goal each as an impressive
Portugal cruised to a 4-0 win to seal a berth in the round of 16.
"We played a good game today. We tried to control the ball, to create
opportunities to score," Sousa said after his side posted their second
consecutive win in the tournament.
"The pitch was a bit difficult. It was hard to play. It was tough to
keep the ball in play but we showed good touch to create
opportunities," Sousa said.
"Qatar was waiting. Their lines were a bit old. We had to have
patience to score," Sousa said.
"After the first goal, we scored second and then the third to be in
the game. We got those goals and it was a good game for us," he added.
Sousa said winning two games out of two has made things easy for his
side ahead of their third Group C clash.
"That's what we are playing for - to go to the last game with a chance
to keep things in our favour," Sousa said.
"Now we have two (favourable) results before playing that match.
That's great for us. We have seven goals, no goals conceded. We want
to stay in first place," he added.
When asked about Qatar's performance on Wednesday, a thoughtful Sousa
said: "Qatar, I think, did more or less the same things they did
against Colombia. But I think maybe we were more capable and we kept
more of the ball possession in the danger zones."
He explained: "They could have counter-attacked and made things
dangerous for us. They were capable of creating trouble for us but we
were capable of resolving those situations."
Sousa said: "But that's the game. It is difficult for any team to
control the game for 90 minutes. We know that we had some troublesome
moments but we were united to keep those problems away. Sometimes it
was difficult but we managed to survive those (tough) moments."
Portugal take on Colombia on June 6 in Dunedin.
