DOHA: Veteran Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez on Thursday said he
wants to win trophies with new employers Al Sadd.
The 35-year-old midfielder, who won the Champions League with
Barcelona last Sunday, on Thursday was unveiled as an Al Sadd player.
Club secretary Jassim Al Rumaihi was present during the press official
press conference.
"I am happy to join Al Sadd for the next two seasons. I will make
every effort so that Al Sadd wins titles," Xavi said. “I would like to
win as much as possible," he said.
"I cant wait to get started. I would like to learn a new culture of
football here in Qatar and also contribute with what I have learned
from my time playing in Spain," he added.
When asked about his knowledge on Qatar Stars League (QSL), Xavi said:
“I have followed Al Sadd closely. They narrowly missed out on the
title but they did well in the Emir Cup. These are the competitions
that I want to win.”
He added: “I want to be remembered at Al Sadd as one of the great
players. I want to win the Asian Champions League and many domestic
titles.”
He explained: “I am going to exert all my efforts to win as many
titles as possible. I also want to thank the Qatari people for their
amazing welcome.”
He also spoke of past greats who have played in the Qatar Stars League.
“I know that I follow in the footsteps of players like Rual, I know
this is a quality league with a high level of competition,” Xavi said.
Xavi said he wanted to lead from the front at his new side.
"I am looking for a new challenge and I believe my experience in Spain
will come in handy to get good results at Al Sadd," he added.
At the beginning of the press conference, club secretary Al Rumaihi
said: "We are delighted to announce the beginning of a new phase for
Spain and Barcelona legend Xavi. We are happy to welcome him at Al
Sadd."
Xavi said he will become an ambassador for the 2022 FIFA World Cup
which will be hosted by Qatar.
"Everyone here is working to organize the World Cup in a fitting
manner. I am honored that I have been chosen as an ambassador for the
World Cup in Qatar in 2022," Xavi said.
