FIFA President congratulates Lekhwiya on 'determined' QSL campaign

DOHA: FIFA President Gianni Infantino has congratulated Lekhwiya on winning their 5th Qatar Stars League (QSL) title, saying Djamal Belmadi's players ran a 'determined' campaign.

In a letter addressed to the Qatar Football Association (QFA) President, Infantino said: "Lekhwiya SC are the 2016-17 champions of Qatar. It gives me great pleasure to send my warmest congratulations to Lekhwiya SC or their fifth championships in the past seven season."

Infantino added: "The title is the result of the determination of everyone involved and my congratulations go to the players, the coach, the administration, the entire technical and medical staff as well as the fans for this great achievement."

The FIFA chief said in his letter addressed to the QFA President: "On behalf of the entire football community, I would like to thank Lekhwiya SC and your association for helping spread the positive message of football."

At the end of round 25, Lekhwiya sealed their fifth QSL title win with a round to spare. Belmadi helped Lekhwiya win two back-to-back titles seven years ago.

The club went on to bag two more titles under Eric Gerets and then Michael Laudrup before Belmadi engineered a successful run in the 2016-17 season.
