DOHA: Hosts Qatar on Tuesday produced a slick performance on home turf
to rout Maldives 4-0 in their 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup
joint-qualifying match.
Two goals by Boualem Khoukhi (28 and 68), a second-half strike by
Mohammed Kasolo (69) and Mohamed Musa's goal in injury time saw the
home side cantered to their fifth consecutive win in Group C.
Qatar now lead the group with 15 points from five matches. The
reigning Gulf champions are now five points clear of second-placed
Hong Kong.
Also on Tuesday, Hong Kong stunned hosts Bhutan 1-0 in the other Group C Clash.
Al Anabi now require just two more victories at most to automatically
progress from the group into the next round of qualification.
It was Qatar's second home victory in less than a week, after beating
rivals China 1-0 in the same Al Sadd stadium 1-0 on October 8.
Qatar dominated the first-half in terms of possession and
opportunities and went into the interval with a deserved 1-0 lead
thanks a well-worked team move that was capped by Khoukhi’s 28th
minute opener at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.
The pattern of a dominant Qatar side frustrated by a compact defence,
well-drilled by New Zealand’s 2010 FIFA World Cup-qualifying coach
Ricki Herbert, continued in the second-half with the home side having
a number of opportunities to add to their tally.
Qatar eventually made it 2-0 when Kasola connected with a 69th minute
corner and then, just 60 seconds after the Al Sadd defender had
side-footed home his second goal of the qualifiers, Al Arabi star
Khoukhi scored his second of the match.
Qatar would add one more to the 23 goals that they had amassed during
the qualifiers thus far, with Musa scoring the fourth of the match two
minutes into second-half stoppage time.
Qatar visit Bhutan for their match on November 17.
