L’ Alcidia, Spain: Defender Juan Ventura’s last minute own goal
enabled Qatar to hold Guinea Equatorial 3-3 in their Group A match
in the L’Alcúdia International under-20 Football Tournament, at Els
Arcs Municipal Stadium, L’ Alcudia.
Having lost to Chile before drawing Atletico Madrid earlier in the
week ;Ventura’s goal helped Qatar to a crucial point in their final
group match in the twelve-team tournament. And now, Joao Pereira’s
men have to wait for the end of the group stage in hope of snatching
one of the two best third tickets to advance to the quarter-finals.
Subsequent to incisive rallies, Aitor Armarildo put Guinea Equatorial
ahead in the 18th minute as he latched onto a long pass and smashed it
past Qatar’s gloveman Yazan Naeim, who failed to negotiate the lofted
shot.
Guinea’s talented playmaker Pepin Diokombo added the second goal
on 32 minutes to send his team to the locker room with a two-goal lead.

In the second half, the Qataris poured forward, a swift goal through Mustafa
Abdulrahman just three minutes into play was adequate enough to disentangle
their African opponents, Qatar striker Ahmed Sayed was fouled inside the
penalty box just ten minutes later, and the resulting penalty was converted
by skipper Bassam Al Rawi.
With the game locked at 2-2, Khalid Muneer came close to giving Qatar
the lead on 54 minutes, however, the gifted winger saw his close range
shot cleared off the goal-line by defender Tony Marvin, who recompensed
for his role as the culprit in the penalty leading up to Qatar’s equalizer.
The wasted chance proved costly for Qatar, as Guinea regained their lead
minutes after; David Elizer’s looping volley from outside the box should
have been saved by Naiem, but the keeper was off his line and the ball found
its way into the back of the net.
With the Guineans overly prudent in fear of losing their lead for yet a second
time, Ahmed Sayed pierced down the left flank before sending a low cross
towards the six-yard box, unfortunately for Guinea, left back Juan Ventura
sent the ball into his own net in bizarre fashion.
Qatar features in Group A alongside Chile, Guinea Equatorial
and Spanish club Atliteco Madrid.
Qatar is preparing for the GCC U-19 tournament set to take place in
September, as well as the AFC qualification group in October.
