Qatar eyeing quarters at Asian Futsal Championship in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT: Qatar coach on Wednesday said he is eyeing quarterfinals at the Asian Futsal Championship. Coach Tiago Pulido said: "The players have prepared well. They have the ability to surprise the big teams." Qatar is pooled in Group D along with Japan, Australia and Malaysia. "We are the smallest country at this event but we have come here with big hearts," he said at a press conference. "We have come here with the intention of competing hard and learning new things as we go along," Pulido said. "For us being here is not just a matter of playing. We want to win," he said. "We want to get better every game," he said. "We had a great preparatory camp in Portugal. That helped us on many front," Pulido said. "We have strong boys who fight all the way," the coach said. The tournament ends on Feb 21. Group A: Uzbekistan, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia Group B: Iran, Iraq, China, Jordan Group C: Thailand, Vietnam, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan Group D: Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Qatar The 16 participating teams have been divided into four groups of four teams and each group will play a one-round league where each team in the group will play one match against every other team. The top two teams in each group (eight teams in total) will qualify for the knockout stage and the four winners of the quarter-finals will qualify for the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will advance to the final and the two losing teams will play in the 3rd/4th placing match. The four losers of the quarter-finals will then feature in play-off matches to determine the 5th placed team.
