DOHA: Qatar, coached by Jorge Fossati, will play an international friendly against Azerbaijan on March 9, it was confirmed on Tuesday. The friendly will take place at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium as Qatar prepare for two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in late March. Qatar face Iran (March 23) and Uzbekistan (March 28) in the two games. Al Anabi lost to Iran and Uzbekistan in their first-legs last September. "Qatar expects a tough game against Azerbaijan who play physical game more often than not," a team official said. Fossati's boys are ranked 85 on the FIFA ranking computer. Qatar are in fourth spot in Group A of the Asian Zone qualifying campaign. Azerbaijan play Germany in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying game on March 26. Azerbaijan are in third place of their group headed by Germany teams with 12 points. Northern Ireland are in second spot. On January 17, veteran striker Sebastian Soria scored early in the first half as Qatar battled to a gritty 1-1 draw against Moldova at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Soria defeated Modlova goalkeeper Alexei Koşelev with a slick shot from outside the penalty box as home fans celebrated the team's first and only goal in the 3rd minute. After a tense battle, Moldova produced the equaliser in the 24th minute when Andrei Cojocari levelled the score with a spectacular volley from the corner of the Qatar box. In what was the first meeting between the two sides, Qatar walked with the kind of match practice they were seeking ahead of two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches to be played at the end of March.
